Dongara Irwin Race Club Annual Race Day Family Tent
The event is held on Easter Saturday and has been running for many decades. Dongara Irwin Race Club Secretary and Treasurer Janette Gooch says she recently found a race book from the 1940’s.
She says, “The 2018 event was marvellous. We had huge numbers and the day went really smoothly.”
Approximately 3000 people attend the races, coming not only from the Midwest, but also state wide.
The family area is a new addition to the day. Janette says, “Horse racing isn’t ideally for children, but we’re a community and we encourage families to attend the races. The family area gives the kids something to do which means the parents can enjoy themselves too.”
The family area includes a bouncy castle, face painter, and free fruit and water. Janette says it’s a sectioned off area away from the main crowd. “The family area is quieter than the main area, plus it’s shady. It’s a nice place for families to retreat so it’s really popular.”
Children receive a token upon entry to the races. This year they were able to redeem that for a free icypole.
Other highlights of the annual race day include Fashions of the Field, footraces and live music provided by a local artist.
