Mitsui E&P Australia – Mid West Activity Update

10am – 6pm, Wednesday, 23 June 2021

Function Centre, Shire of Irwin Recreation Centre,
Point Leander Drive, Port Denison

Mitsui E&P Australia (MEPAU) invites local residents to our upcoming information exchange session covering gas exploration, production and development activities in the Shire of Irwin including the Waitsia Stage 2 development project.

Local stakeholder engagement is an important part of MEPAU’s program of assessing and developing gas resources in the onshore northern Perth Basin, which is based on the work undertaken since the 1960s by predecessor companies.

The session is a chance for MEPAU to outline our plans, answer any questions you may have about our projects, identify opportunities and further understand each other’s views.

Activities Overview:

In 2016, Waitsia Stage 1 began producing gas, as an Extended Production Test, at the refurbished Xyris Production Facility, off Pye Road. This test allowed reuse of the existing facility while providing valuable information about the Waitsia gas field and producing 10 Terajoules (TJ)/day of gas.

In 2020, Stage 1 was expanded to include another nearby production well and a connecting pipeline to the nearby Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline. This expansion has more than doubled production to 30 TJ/day.

We are now preparing for construction of Waitsia Stage 2. This involves constructing a temporary construction village as well as a new gas plant adjacent to the existing production facility, connecting two existing wells and drilling up to six additional wells. The new gas plant will be able to produce up to 250 TJ/day.

In 2018, MEPAU referred the Waitsia Stage 2 project to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). Following environmental impact assessment by the EPA, the Minister for Environment approved the project in February 2021. Other regulatory approvals are steadily progressing.

Feedback from stakeholders has been sought throughout the design phase and we’d like to keep a wide range of local stakeholders updated as the project enters the construction phase being managed by Clough, a pioneering engineering and construction company established in Perth in 1919.

At the same time we’re producing gas and developing the Waitsia gas field, we’re continuing to actively explore and also to undertake decommissioning and rehabilitation activities. This means that our overall footprint is gradually reducing and that land is progressively being returned to its previous use.
